TiZA lunch menu promotes lifelong healthy habits

Over the last couple years, parents around the nation have become alarmingly aware of the unhealthy food options students are consuming during school lunches.  School nutrition has become such an issue, it now has its own TV show; Jaime Oliver’s “Food Revolution” promotes healthy food education in schools.

TiZA has taken it upon itself to lead an initiative to get kids excited about nutrition.  Instead of eliminating kids’ favorite foods, they’ve twisted in some creativity to make healthy recipes that kids will still enjoy.  Students still have the option for kid-approved favorites like pizza, but made with pita bread, real cheese and fresh tomato sauce instead of processed ingredients.  Every day, students also have the option to load up on fruit and vegetables with a salad bar that includes mixed greens, spinach, celery, carrot sticks and a variety of fruit.

Studies have shown that what students eat affects their everyday activities, including the way they perform in class.  “It’s important for our students to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle,” said Magdy Rabeaa, director of [insert title here] at TiZA.  “We are not only teaching them how to be healthy, but allowing them to practice a healthy lifestyle with the variety of nutritious options we offer in the lunchroom.”

Not only are parents thrilled about the healthy lunch options at TiZA, but the students also enjoy their colorful menu.  Student’s responses when asked what they like about TiZA lunches were:

•    “They cook a lot of healthy food and it’s yummy!” said TiZA third-grader.
•    “I love the pizza, because it tastes good! “said TiZA fifth-grader.

The school lunch menu is created by TiZA’s Wellness Committee, comprised of teachers, parents, students and staff.  The Wellness Committee is also responsible for creating health-conscious content for TiZA’s monthly newsletter, “Healthy Kids Care!”
